Two strategic road development projects awarded funding to improve connectivity in the Hungarian–Croatian border region
Information
The Monitoring Committee of the Interreg VI-A Hungary–Croatia Programme has awarded nearly EUR 7 million in European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funding to support the implementation of two flagship projects aimed at improving cross-border road connections. The Committee held its sixth meeting on 11 March 2026, during which it decided on the projects to be funded under Priority 3: “Connected Border Region.”
Under this decision, two project partnerships will receive almost EUR 7 million in ERDF funding to implement two large-scale Operations of Strategic Importance (OSI). The investments are intended to enhance the physical connectivity of the Hungarian–Croatian border area, with a particular focus on establishing new cross-border road links.
The supported developments include:
the preparation and construction of the missing road connection between Sárok (Hungary) and Kneževo (Croatia);
the establishment of a new road connection between Zákány (Hungary) and Gotalovo (Croatia).
Both projects were identified during the Programme’s strategic planning phase, and their key components were incorporated into the programming documents prepared under the CBJointStrategy initiative. Led by the Pannon EGTC, the CBJointStrategy project brought together stakeholders from both sides of the border to develop a joint Hungarian–Croatian development strategy. This strategy serves as the foundation for the 2021–2027 programming period and identifies a number of concrete strategic project ideas for the border region.
The planned investments will make a significant contribution to improving the accessibility of the border region, strengthening economic and social ties, and fostering the development of a more integrated and functionally connected cross-border area.
The contracting process for the two projects is expected to begin shortly, while project activities are scheduled to commence in April and May 2026. With these latest funding decisions, the Programme has now committed its entire available financial allocation.
