The Municipality of Makó, the Municipality of Sânnicolau Mare and the Municipality of Jimbolia won a joint project under the Cross-border Cooperation Programme Hungary-Romania 2007-2013 entitled “Dance and Music”. The main objective of the project is to present local historical, musical, cultural values and folk traditions through artistic programmes in the territory of the EGTC.
The establishment of a Mayors’ Forum also served to facilitate the rapprochement of the three municipalities, which contributed to strengthening economic cooperation, and to developing regional economic development programmes and projects. In the name of cultural cooperation, an International Folk Dance Festival was organised. Furthermore, concerts and chamber music concerts honouring the memory of Béla Bartók, a world-famous composer with roots related to the region, were held in all three municipalities over the past year. Local cultural institutions and organisations also participated in the implementation the programme, which are key actors in the preservation of traditions and culture. In addition to the local governments and cultural centres of the settlements, the Maros Dance Ensemble of Makó, the Harmónia Chamber Choir, the Bartók Béla Elementary School of Makó, the Makó Cultural and Public Culture Nonprofit Ltd., the Pipacs Dance Ensemble of Jimbolia, the Doina Sansava Dance Ensemble of Sânnicolau Mare and the Pro Bartók Association also contributed to the implementation of the event.

The EU supported project not only financed the organisational costs of the event, but also contributed to the purchase of the equipment and supplies required for the performances. The closing event, held in Makó on the 24th of February, proved the expectations of the project partners to be true: there is indeed a public need to get know each other’s tradition.
