Without Borders: the Arrabona EGTC 2024 success stories

Since its creation in 2010, Arrabona EGTC has been working on the cooperation of the Danube Region community.

In April, the EGTC hosted the Border Tourism Development Forum at the Pannonhalma Abbey, creating a platform for cooperation, exchange of experiences and networking opportunities for tourism stakeholders in the region. Following the forum, the stakeholders of the Szigetköz-Žitný ostrov-Pannonhalma region are further reflecting on a joint Territorial Action Plan, which will allow them to submit a consortium application under the Interreg VI-A Hungary-Slovakia programme.

In the summer of 2024, the tourist entry and exit point in Dunakiliti, prepared and managed by Arrabona EGTC, was inaugurated.

In charge of the summer Bicycle and Water camps and with its “Cycling across 7 borders” programme, Arrabona EGTC brought around 6,000 overnight stays to the Szigetköz-Žitný ostrov-Pannonhalma region, providing an experience for many children and families.

One of the highlights of the year was the 4th Győr Climate Expo, where EGTC participated not only as an organiser but also as an exhibitor. In addition to the professional programmes of the three-day international event, the local and international audience was offered interactive and entertaining programmes. Arrabona EGTC provided free travel to the Expo for nearly 500 students from Slovakia and Hungary.

In the #RISKCOOP project, a partnership between Arrabona EGTC and Hungarian and Slovakian municipalities, disaster management organisations are modernising their equipment, jointly training their volunteer rescue teams and developing a cross-border cooperation strategy.

In November the GREEN CITIES project was launched, which aims to promote the sustainable revitalisation of green spaces in the Slovak-Hungarian border region. The four founding cities of Dunajská Streda, Győr, Mosonmagyaróvár and Šamorín are among our member municipalities where parks, urban space rehabilitation or green roofs for school buildings are being developed. As an integral part of the programme, Arrabona EGTC has undertaken to develop and implement a Green Ambassador scheme in partnership to promote sustainability and raise awareness in communities. We will also provide awareness-raising tools for our smaller member communities, such as bee hotels, rainwater harvesters and composting bins, to promote and demonstrate sustainable, positive practices in local educational institutions and small communities.

In November, the Arrabona EGTC organised a successful Study Tour for mayors of the Szigetköz and Žitný ostrov municipalities.  This time, the four municipalities of Horný Bar, Mierovo, Dunajská Streda and Veľký Meder in the Žitný ostrov region hosted the programmes.
