Sustainability Day for students from Slovakia and Hungary at the 2024 Climate Expo
Information
The 4th Győr Climate Expo was held between 3 and 5 October 2024, where Arrabona EGTC as co-organiser was responsible for the organisation and implementation of professional programmes and for the provision of awareness-raising programmes.
The EGTC was present not only as an organiser but also as an exhibitor during the whole Expo. The organisation played a major role in internationalising the event, targeting and shaping the attitudes of the local and international youth generation.
Within the framework of the professional programme, on the first day of the Expo, the twin cities of Győr gave presentations on their environmental and climate practices in the spirit of the Green Deal. The day was closed by an interesting professional discussion on climate change between Dr. András Gelencsér and Dr. Tamás Pálvölgyi, moderated by Dr. András Torma.
The programme allowed the twin cities to learn about each other’s good practices and gave the interested public and professionals attending the event an insight into the different climate programmes. This was further enhanced by a workshop on biodiversity and community gardens on the second day. The workshop was attended by representatives of the twin municipalities and a local NGO, the Muszai Association, whose leader shared his local experience with community gardens.
To close the second day, we brought to the Expo visitors the highly successful nature film “Lake Tisza is a man-made paradise”, which was screened and then one of the filmmakers, Dimitry Lyasuk, answered questions from the audience. We were pleased to see that some visitors had travelled to Győr just for this programme.
In parallel with the professional programmes, the stations organised by Arrabona EGTC were constantly visited by pupils from schools in the region. EGTC provided free travel to the 4th Climate Expo in Győr for nearly 500 students, as well as participation in the awareness-raising programmes.
The students who came to the event participated in the programmes according to a predefined schedule. At the Arrabona EGTC stand, they could play with EGTC dice, learn about energy-efficient homes at the Eco-host’s exhibition of 9 roll-ups and take a quiz on the subject. Arrabona EGTC’s regional board game, Arrabona EGTC Bingo, was presented, which aims to showcase the tourist attractions and values of the Szigetköz and Csallóköz and the region of Pannonhalma. They could watch the performance of the Water Theatre of Kajárpéc: The Jungle Book, which not only taught the audience a lot, but also entertained them. Thanks to the Füles Family Beekeeping, they had the opportunity to get an insight into the life of bees, the process of honey production and they could taste the different types of honey. Anyone who wanted could make a beeswax wrap, the perfect substitute for fresh foil. Thanks to the Arrabona EGTC, Pannon University was represented at the event with its Adventure Earth – Water – Air programme, which allowed children to learn about sustainability through play.
Overall, both the professional programme and the awareness-raising activities for students were successful, the feedback from visitors was positive and most of them said they would like to come again next year. Plans are already in place for the future. Arrabona EGTC would like to attract more visitors from across the border, with an even more varied programme. At the Climate Expo 2025, they want to showcase Arrabona EGTC’s Green Ambassador scheme and innovative tools to help achieve sustainability goals, and in 2026 they will focus on green investments.
