Led by the Pannon EGTC and involving 12 partners, the cross-border cycling tourism project entitled Amazon of Europe Bike Trail Hungary–Croatia has been launched.

The main objective of the project is to improve the quality of tourist attractions and services, increase the attractiveness of the region for domestic and international cycling tourists, and achieve a greater development impact in the cross-border region, particularly in the areas of tourism and the preservation of natural and cultural heritage, by connecting local communities, service providers, and the population. The project offers tourism products in the border region, which will increase the influx of tourists and thus stimulate the development of supply and the growth of small local businesses.

The project’s activity packages focus on three main areas: infrastructure development, service development and image building, as well as training and knowledge sharing.

Infrastructure developments will include the creation of visitor centers in Siklós, Lenti, and Osijek, as well as the development of bicycle-friendly accommodation, such as 12 new rooms in Koprivnica-Križevci County. In addition, rest areas, information points, storage facilities, lookout towers and pontoons will be built, and the road leading to Őrtilos will be modernized, thereby improving accessibility.

In the area of service development and image building, the project aims to develop a unified image and complex tourism packages, as well as to implement a quality assurance program with the involvement of local service providers. The initiative also includes the launch of international marketing campaigns, focusing primarily on the DACH and Benelux markets, as well as the development of digital information systems and maps.

The aim of the training and knowledge-sharing component is to prepare local entrepreneurs and tourism stakeholders for bicycle-friendly operations and to familiarize tourism professionals with the natural values of the biosphere reserve, thereby promoting the growth of sustainable tourism in the region.

Kick-off Meeting – a joint start

The official launch event of the project will take place on November 6, 2025, in Kapela Dvor (Croatia), with a total of 36 representatives (3 per partner) from the 12 partner organizations participating. The aim of the kick-off meeting is to officially launch the project, introduce the partners, and review the main objectives, activities, and management processes of the project. The event will also provide an opportunity for the partners to jointly agree on the working methodology, schedule, and framework for cooperation, laying the foundations for the successful implementation of the project.
