WATREG: Results supporting the regulation of Hungarian–Slovak cross-border water tourism now available
Information
On 4 August 2026, Arrabona EGTC presented the key results of the WATREG – Joint Water Tourism Platform on the Hungarian–Slovak Border project at an online dissemination event. The aim of the event was to present the professional materials developed during the project, as well as practical solutions supporting the cross-border development of water tourism.
The project was based on a comparative analysis of Hungarian and Slovak water tourism regulations, with a particular focus on the Szigetköz and Žitný ostrov (Csallóköz) regions. The professional work examined the specific regulatory frameworks of the two countries, the administrative difficulties encountered in practice, and opportunities for developing safe and sustainable water tourism.
The project resulted in:
- a comparative analysis of Hungarian and Slovak water tourism regulations;
- a structured legal knowledge base;
- an easy-to-understand summary of the most important information;
- a practical checklist for water tourists and tour organisers;
- a trilingual (Hungarian–Slovak–English) online information platform.
One of the key lessons of the project is that the main barriers to the development of cross-border water tourism stem not primarily from legal gaps, but from differences in regulatory approaches and a lack of information. The knowledge base and online platform therefore make the most important rules, requirements and practical information available in one place.
The project results are available here:
