After almost a year of preparation, the Pannon EGTC’s general assembly decided on the Croatian and Bosnian universities’ intention to join.

The EGTC’s main objective is to provide a platform and a framework for cooperation between actors from the so-called South Pannonian region along the Drava and Sava rivers, which can be used as a platform for the exchange of experience and as a joint development opportunity using EU funds. In line with these objectives, their mission is to support the professional, political and social integration of these regions in Europe.

Universities are seen as the strongest actors and partners in achieving these objectives. This is why the Pannon EGTC is building a network of universities who aim to grow the whole region into a single economic and development area with a focus on sustainability, by making the EU’s internal and external borders interoperable, as the networking will undoubtedly broaden the opportunities for cooperation between local authorities and universities and create opportunities for obtaining additional EU development funds beyond the frames of the university and the local authority.

An active relationship has been established with the Varaždin University North since the summer of 2023, with meetings in Varaždin and Pécs, during which the professional relationship between the two organisations has deepened. In early 2024, the representatives of the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek visited Pécs, where, in addition to the university relations with Pécs, the parties also discussed the accession to the Pannon EGTC. The University of Pécs and János Magdó, the Hungarian Consul in Osijek, assisted the EGTC in establishing contacts with the two Croatian universities.

The EGTC has been cooperating with the University of Mostar in the framework of projects, while the University of Tuzla is an associated strategic partner of the REHEATEAST project. The meeting with the universities and the University of Sarajevo took place in Sarajevo in April 2024 at the Hungarian Embassy.
