How did the pandemic affect tourism?

The SHARE project implemented by the Pannon EGTC is assessing the impact of the pandemic on tourism and event management.

The SHARE 1 project searched for good European solutions in the field of cultural heritage protection. The pandemic has brought a remarkable change in tourism following which the desire and willingness to travel have decreased or changed significantly. As we move into the post-pandemic world, the period of the economic recovery will be long and very challenging. The aim of the SHARE 2 is to reveal the impact of the pandemic on international tourism and to suggest innovative management practices for heritage tourism destinations to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors to the cultural heritage sites in Italy, Croatia, Spain, Hungary, Romania and in the United Kingdom.

Furthermore, the purpose of this project is to collect already existing good practices and strategies.

The project will contain a detailed online survey about how the pandemic has affected the behaviour and expectations of tourism, how the people’s perception of risk has changed, how residents, domestic and foreign visitors react to the relaxation of restrictions and finally how the desire to travel has changed.

The project partners would like to know the opinion and experience of the population, professionals and tourists about the trips, visits of cultural heritage sites and events of the COVID-19 era, so they launched a survey on the topic. As a key research element of the project the completely anonymous survey is designed by experts from the University of Greenwich (UK) and all partners.

The survey results will contribute to helping cultural heritage sites, events and festivals across Europe to manage the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, build resilience and plan for the future.
